One of the fastest growing sports is the use of crossbows for hunting due, in part, to the relaxation of laws in some states of the US regarding their use. It is always a good idea to obtain training in the use of any time of archery equipment before you use if especially if you are new to the sport and buy your crossbow online. To shoot accurately with a crossbow, although easier in some ways than with a regular bow, takes practice but some tips to help you are outlined here.
Cocking the Crossbow
It is essential that the crossbow is cocked properly and consistently each time. You should aim to latch the string in the center every time. It is easy to place it off center, especially when hand cocking and this will result in variable accuracy. Even using a cocking device you can latch it off center so make sure the string is centered properly before you start. Keep the string centered properly throughgout the drawing and adjust it carefully if it seems off centered.
Use a Crossbow Rest
Using a rest can make a huge difference to your accuracy. Any small movements while you are shooting can impact on your accuracy. You can use any rest sold for rifles can be used for crossbows including shooting sticks and bipods.
Keep Your Target As Close as Possible
Crossbows are much more accurate at close distances. Even the best, fastest crossbows are very inaccurate over thirty yards as the bolt can lower as much as 45 inches over this distance. Compensating for this is almost impossible at this distance. Even at thirty yards the bolt can drop more than twelve inches. Keeping the target within thirty yards can be a big help in improving accuracy.
Although these are very simple tips they can really help new crossbow hunters to shoot accurately.
