Guide to Buying a Crossbow

Review brought to you by Online Discount Archery Store

The popularity of crossbow hunting has increased recently with many people preferring the ease with which a crossbow can be used accurately. A conventional bow has a steep learning curve but the use of a  crossbow can be learned quickly and easily. Many people also take up crossbow hunting as they get older and find drawing a bow increasingly difficult. As more hunters reach their retirement the use of crossbows will continue to increase.

Buying a crossbow can be daunting for a novice so we’ve put together some guidelines to help.

Always handle the model of crossbow you intend to purchase. There are personal preferences in the way a crossbow handles and feels when shooting so it really does help to use one before you buy. Try different models out at your local archery club or rent one before you shop.

Weight is also a matter of personal preference. For a bow usually the lighter the better but a very light crossbow can be harder to handle and shoot accurately. On the other hand a heavier crossbow can be difficult to move around with in the woods or on a long hike so a compromise is necessary.

Scopes

There are a range of different scopes that will work on crossbows but whichever you choose alqays try to go for the best optics you can afford.

Crossbows traditionally have recurve limbs but crossbows nowadays may have wheels or cams. A crossbow with cams will usually be faster than the other types but can be harder to draw. A model with wheels, although not so fast has more power if you are after big game. Crossbows with recurve limbs are simpler and can still be extremely fast.

A crossbow needs to be quiet when used and different designs have been made to cushion the noise. Making the limbs parallel decreases the noise as does using soft materials on the limbs. This also helps to decrease noise associated with accidentally knocking against trees or other objects.  Noise dampening devices are available to purchase separately and are fixed to the limbs to reduce both vibration and noise.

Cocking Devices

More companies are producing crossbows with built in cocking devices and it is well worth paying extra for this feature. It is easy to cock a crossbow this way and it saves having to haul around rope or another cocking device.

Crossbow Scopes

Buy the best scope you can afford. As with all things you get what you pay for and a cheap scope will seriously impair your accuracy and enjoyment. Red dot scopes are becoming increasingly popular and are accurate and reliable for shots up to forty yards. There are also scopes with cross hairs and scopes with multiple lines in the reticle for sighting at different distances.

Crossbow Safety

Make sure you know about the safety system of the crossbow you are considering. Some are easier to use than others.
